frequently asked questions
What is counselling and how can it help me?
Counselling is a safe, confidential space to talk through life’s challenges with a trained professional. At Inspiration Counselling by Joy, we support individuals, couples, families, children under 12, and teens 12+ with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, relationships, trauma, life transitions, and teen issues. Faith-based counselling is also available if that’s important to you. Our focus is cultivating resilience and enriching growth– not just quick fixes.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is about getting to know you. We’ll talk about what’s brought you to counselling, your goals, and any history that feels important. I’ll explain confidentiality, answer your questions, and we’ll see if we’re a good fit. There’s no pressure to share everything at once.
How long is each session and how many will I need?
Sessions are 50-60 minutes. Some people find 6-8 sessions helpful, others prefer longer-term support. We’ll review regularly and you decide what works for you. My approach focuses on building deep roots for lasting change.
Do you offer online or in-person sessions?
Yes. I offer face-to-face sessions in Brisbane and secure telehealth sessions Australia-wide and internationally. You choose what feels most comfortable.
What therapy approaches do you use?
I tailor evidence-based approaches to suit you, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Art Therapy, Person-Centred Therapy, and Narrative Therapy, vision board course, online coaching, mindfulness practices and selective mutism peer group. For clients who want it, I also integrate faith-based counselling.
What are your fees? Do you offer rebates?
Standard session fee is $80. Payment is due at the time of session.
I am currently not registered for Medicare rebates. Please check with your private health fund as some funds offer rebates for counselling. Contact me if you’d like to discuss financial hardship options.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and no-shows may incur the full fee, as that time is reserved for you. I understand emergencies happen. Just contact me as soon as you can.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes. Everything you share is confidential with 3 exceptions: if there’s risk of harm to you or others, if a child is at risk, or if required by law. I’ll always try to talk with you first if I need to break confidentiality. I follow professional ethical guidelines.
Do I need a referral to see you?
No referral needed. You can book directly.
How do I book an appointment?
You can call or text 0401 352 648 or email loveighodaro@myyahoo.com. I’ll get back to you within 1 business day.
Do you work with children and teens?
Yes. I see children under 12, teens 12+, individuals, couples, and families. For clients under 16, parent or guardian consent is required. I usually check in briefly with parents or carers while respecting the young person’s confidentiality.
What if I’m in crisis?
